Unlock the power of theme and emotion in your score.
How do you find the right "voice" for a scene when the emotions are complex and the subtext is heavy? Join Emmy-nominated composer Tom Howe (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Daisy Jones & The Six) for an immersive, two-part masterclass dedicated to the most essential tool in a composer’s kit: Melody.
Part I: Cracking the Code – Lessons from RichmondIn the first half, Tom will pull back the curtain on his work for the global hit series Ted Lasso. Using a live piano and original score breakdowns, he will demonstrate how to navigate "difficult" scenes—those moments where the balance between humor, heartbreak, and hope is razor-thin.
- The Piano Session: Watch and listen as Tom demonstrates how a simple melodic fragment evolves into a full narrative arc.
- Deconstructing Difficulty: Learn why certain melodic choices work where others fail in high-stakes storytelling.
Part II: The Melody Clinic – Bring Your "Impossible" ScenesThe second half of the session belongs to you. We’re turning the classroom into a creative laboratory. We invite participating composers to bring their own "tough nuts to crack."
- The Challenge: Are you working on a game, a series, or a film where the melody just won’t "land"?
- The Consultation: Bring your work-in-progress (video or audio) and present your struggle. Tom will provide live feedback, alternative melodic approaches, and hands-on advice to help you bridge the gap between the screen and the score.
Note to participants: Whether it’s a sprawling RPG theme or a subtle 30-second TV cue, bring the projects that are keeping you up at night. Let’s solve them together.
